Hyeji Bak

1st Prize Percussion 2019

Hyeji Bak started her musical studies in Daegu, South Korea. She started the piano at three years old, then switched to the percussion when she was fourteen, upon discovering her talent for percussion instruments. During her first year, she won the Kyeongbuk Arts High School Competition, also obtaining a scholarship from her high school. In 2010, Hiyeji Bak was admitted to the Seoul National University, where she received a scholarship to study with Kyeong Hwan Choi, and in 2015, at the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Stuttgart in the class of Marta Klimasara. The same year, she won First Prize and three further awards at the Belgium Universal Marimba Competition as well as First Prize at the Sparda Classic Awards. In 2016, she was awarded Third Prize at the Chicago International Percussion Competition and Second Prize at the August Everding Competition in Munich.

Her efforts truly paid off in 2019 when she won First Prize at the Geneva International Music Competition, as well as six special prizes, including the Audience Prize, Yamaha Young Artist Prize and Bergerault Marimba Prize. Following these remarkable achievements, she graduated from the HMDK Stuttgart with highest distinction in January 2020.

Hyeji Bak made her debut as a soloist in 2008 with the Daegu Philharmonic Orchestra. Since then, she has performed with orchestras such as the Seoul Philharmonic, the Gyunggi Philharmonic, the Guynggi Philharmonic and the Constance Philharmonic. Furthermore, she was invited to perform as soloist at the International Percussion Ensemble Week in Croatia, Pulse 2020, as well at the 50th anniversary of the Kolberg Festival.

She has recently performed recitals in Switzerland and Paris, as well as in Jeju and Daegu, South Korea. Next November, she will be giving a recital in Seoul. Currently an active artist of “The Bridge Company”, Hyeji Bak will soon be performing to a worldwide audience with many concerts planned in Europe and Asia.
