Roberto Saccà
Opera Prize 1989
Laureate of the « Opera » Special Prize at the Geneva Competition in 1989, tenor Roberto Saccà started his career at the Zurich Opera, where he sang under the direction of Nikolaus Harnancourt, among others. Since then, he has performed in some of the world’s major opera houses with renowned partners such as Cecilia Bartoli, Anna Netrebko and Renée Fleming. His German-Italian roots have enabled him to span two worlds; while his Sicilian heritage led him as a student to the Italian bel canto tradition, later in career, he was to explore his German side, with repertoire from Bach to the 20th Century. As a leading Mozart tenor, he gave many performances during the 2006 Mozart Year, including La Clemenza di Tito in Berlin, Entführung aus dem Serail in Turin and Cosi fan tutte in Vienna. In 2014, he made his debut in the title role of Wagners’ Lohengrin in Düsseldorf and also performed for the first time at the New York Metropolitan Opera. Recent roles include Eléazar in La Juive by Halévy, Bacchus in Ariadne auf Naxos by Strauss and Drum Major in Alban Berg’s Wozzeck. In 2016, he made his house and role debut at the Bayreuth Festival. Roberto Saccà is also much in demand as a concertist and has collaborated with renowned conductors; his many engagements include Haydn’s Creation, Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis and Schumann’s Szenen aus Goethes Faust.
