Johannes Martin Kraenzle, Germany - member of the 2016 Voice Jury

Johannes Martin Kränzle is one of the leading baritonists of his generation. Born in Augsburg (Germany), he started out his musical training with violin, composition and musical direction, before devoting himself to voice studies with Martin Grüdler in Frankfurt. After engagements in Dortmund and Hanover, he became a member of the Frankfurt Opera in 1998. Since then, his career has led him to perform in important venues across the world: Scala, Salzbourg Festival, Bregenz, Glyndebourne, San Francisco, Munich, Vienna, Hamburg, Geneva, Tokyo, Tbilisi, Tel Aviv…

His repertoire includes more than 100 different roles, ranging from Mozart to Rossini, Wagner to Tchaïkovsky, and Britten to Rihm. Mr. Kränzle frequently appears on stage, giving concerts, recitals and oratorios. He is recipient of international prizes in Europe (Vercelli, Hanover, Paris) and in Brazil (Rio de Janeiro), where he is now frequently invited to teach. Since 2013, he is also regularly invited as professor at the Hochschule in Cologne.

His chamber opera Der Wurm, obtained 3rd Prize at the Berlin competition in 1997. He produced two recordings, which were praised by critics. He was crowned “Singer of the year” in 2011 by the leading opera magazine Opernwelt. The same year, he also won the Kölner Opernpreis. In 2014, he made his debuts at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in the role of Beckmesser (Wagner’s Meistersinger).
