Károly Schranz, Hungary

Károly Schranz has been second violinist of the Takács Quartet since 1975. Born in Budapest, he began playing the violin at the age of four. A student of the Secondary Music School Béla Bártok, Mr. Schranz received his music diploma from the Franz Liszt Academy of Music where he studied with Mihály Szücs, András Mihály, and György Kurtág.

As a member of the Takács Quartet, he achieved an international career, winning prestigious prizes, including First Prize at the Evian International String Quartet Competition, Gold Medal at the 1978 Portsmouth and Bordeaux Competitions and First Prizes at the Budapest and Bratislava International String Quartet Competition. The Takács Quartet has given concerts all around the world and has recorded more than 50 CDs for Hungaroton, Decca and Hyperion. The ensemble has been in residence at the University of Colorado for 32 years. Its members have a busy schedule, teaching and giving masterclasses worldwide.
