Sing-Yat Chen

Composition finalist 2026

Biography

Sing-Yat Chen (陳星逸) is a Hong Kong composer-pianist, and 2026 Gaudeamus Award finalist. Praised by Neue Musik Zeitung for her “impressively reflective inner struggle,” she integrates literature, science and visual arts into immersive soundscapes. A former Bang on a Can Fellow, she has collaborated with Ensemble Modern and cellist Jeffrey Zeigler. Her works, bridging dualities, have been featured at Festival Mixtur and performed on the historic 1746 Hildebrandt organ.

Shattered sky / remaining land
——
“Inspired by James Turrell’s Skyspace, this work explores samsara through breath. Gazing at an aperture recalls a pale sun after a bleak winter–a punctured sky where
light pierces with sharp agony. From a fragile bass clarinet monologue, the sound gradually fractures into noise, mirroring the crackling glaze of Song Dynasty Ru ware.”
