The Abel Quartet was formed in 2013 by four young Korean musicians, students at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Munich, where they worked with Christoph Poppen and Hariolf Schlichtig. Very soon, the ensemble started winning important prizes, including 2nd Prize at the Everding Competition in 2014, 2nd Prize at the Lyon Competition, then 1st Prize at the Vienna Haydn Competition in 2015.

Since its creation, the Abel Quartet has played in Europe (Dresden, Wörthsee and Paris) as well as in Korea (Seoul, Tong-Yeong, Chanwon and Daejeon). It has been invited to perform as quartet in residence at the Casalmaggiore Festival, in Italy, and at the Ticino Musica Festival, in Lugano. It also made its debut with the Incheon Philharmonic Orchestra in Seoul with the Spohr concerto. In 2017, the Abel Quartet is invited to perform at the Heidelberg Festival.

During its training, the Abel Quartet received coaching from important personalities such as Eberhald Felz and Rainer Schmidt (Hagen Quartet), Heime Müller (Quatuor Artemis), Hartmut Rohde (Mozart Piano Quartet), Piotr Szmiel (Apollon Musagète Quartet), Oliver Wille (Kuss Quartet), as well as from the Cuarteto Casals.

First based in Basel, where they were students of Rainer Schmidt, the members of the quartet now live between Munich and Vienna.
