  • 19 November: official registration of the quartets - drawing lots
  • 20-21November: 1st Round (Recital)
  • 23-24 November: 2nd Round (Semi-final)
  • 27 November: 3rd Round (Final)
Programme

Each quartet may choose the order in which it wishes to perform its programme.

DVD recording – listening session

  • J. Haydn : two contrasting movements from a quartet at free choice
  • Two contrasting movements of a quartet by one of the following composers :    
    • Schubert
    • Schumann
    • Brahms
    • Mendelssohn 

Movements can be chosen freely and must not necessarily be consecutive. Works performed in the DVD can be repeated once in the following rounds.

Recital I (max. 12 quartets - duration max. 45 min.)    

  • J. Haydn : a quartet at free choice
  • Quartet at free choice by one of the following composers :    
    • Schubert
    • Schumann
    • Brahms
    • Mendelssohn

Semi-Final (max. 6 quartets – duration max. 70 minutes)

  • W. A. Mozart, one of the following quartets :
    K. 387, K. 421, K. 428, K. 458, K. 464, K. 465, K. 499, K 575, K. 589, K. 590
  • Compulsory Piece, prize-winning work of the 2015 Composition Prize (max. 15 min)
  • Quartet at free choice of the candidate, composed in the 20th Century, including the Debussy Quartet

Final (max. 3 quartets)

  • L. v. Beethoven : one quartet at free choice of the candidate, except Op. 18
  • Bartòk : one of the six quartets

The Geneva Competition offers the following official prizes:

First Prize                                    CHF 20,000.-  
Second Prize                               CHF 12,000.- 
Third Prize                                   CHF   8,000.-

Special Prizes

Audience Prize                          CHF 1,500.-
Young Audience Prize               CHF 1,000.-
« Concerts de Jussy » Prize      CHF 4,000.- 

Coup de Coeur Breguet Prize    

A Breguet watch will be presented to each member of the quartet winner of a First Prize

  • The Audience Prize is awarded by the audience at the Final performance.
  • The « Young Audience » Special Prize is awarded by young students of the Geneva music schools.
  • The « Concerts de Jussy » Prize is awarded to one finalist String Quartet, which will be invited for a concert in Jussy Church on November 29, 2016
  • The « Coup de Coeur Breguet» Special Prize consists in the recording of a CD, with orchestra, and is awarded by Montres Breguet SA.
